New arrivals - Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cymbals, Scorn, Saigon Rock & Soul, Hangover Lounge, Carlton Melton and many more

In no particular order, (apart from the order they're listed on the invoices), here is a list of the latest arrivals instore - without pictures this time, as it was quicker! Anything with an asterisk means it was released for Record Store Day 2011, so it's limited.

PEANUT BUTTER WOLF - PEANUT BUTTER BREAKS (STONES THROW) LP £16
Originally released way back in 1994 and reissued on the fabulous Stones Throw ten years ago, this still sounds fresh. If you are a downtempo, trip hop, or hip hop fan, this is record the record for you.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE - ISN'T ANYTHING (PLAIN RECORDINGS) LP £19
The debut album proper from MBV, released over 20 years ago. If it's original shoegaze you want, look here. A true indie classic that should be in any self-respecting music fan's collection. In fact, you've probably already got it, and if you haven't, it's probably because you lent it out and never got it back, so now would be a good time to replace it, right?

SCORN - REFUSE; START FIRES (OHM RESISTANCE) 2LP £18
Mick Harris (Napalm Death, Lull, Painkiller, Weakener, Quoit and many others) has enlisted a bit of help from his mate Ian Tracy, who plays live drums on this album, which is as heavyweight as anything he's done before. Bass-heavy, naturally, and as usual, top quality. It would be impossible to recommend this enough.

SURF CITY - KUDOS (FIRE RECORDS) LP £16
Buzz pop psych nuggets from this NZ four piece. Think of the 80s Kiwi jangle pop, mix it in with some VU and 60s UK psych and you've got an idea what this sounds like. And of course the name is taken from The Jesus And Mary Chain, so that is a clear indication of the band's influences.

ELEPHANT9 - DODOVOODOO (RUNE GRAMMOFON) LP £18
The debut album from this Norwegian experimental jazz trio of drums, keys and electric bass. As the band members have a rock background it does have a heavier edge than some contemporary jazz and would bring to mind the funkier side of Deep Purple. We also have their follow-up, Walk The Nile in stock too.

BRUCE HAACK - FARAD:  VOCODER MUSIC 1969-1982 (STONES THROW) LP £20
We've had this weird and interesting album in before, and it went pretty quickly, so here's a restock. Like another electronic music pioneer, his friend Raymond Scott, most of Haack's instruments were homemade, and this album covers the music made by Haack mainly throughout the 70s. Lots of electronics, obviously, and Vocoded vocals sit alongside drones, Moogs, psychedelia, and all sorts of weird bits and bobs. Certainly worth a look/listen for those of you into something a bit different.

V/A - SAIGON ROCK & SOUL (SUBLIME FREQUENCIES) 2LP £25
Fuzzy, exotic, acid rock, psychedelic, surf rock, swinging, funky, soulful. lo-fi, groovy, kitsch - they all apply. This album covers the Vietnamese rock, pop and soul sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s and is on double LP with extensive liner notes. If you want to see how much you think you know about 60s/70s Asian music, check the tracklist! A1. CBC Band - Tình Yêu Tuyệt Vời (The Greatest Love) A2. Elvis Phương - Bài ca ngông (The Crazy Song) A3. Carol Kim - Cái Trâm Em Cài (Your Hair Clip) A4. Thành Mái - Tóc Mai Sợi Vắn Sợi Dài (Long, Uneven Hair) B1. Carol Kim - Nỗi Buồn Con Gái (The Sadness Of Being A Girl) B2. Bich Loan and CBC Band - Con tim và nước mắt (Heart And Tears) B3. Phương Tâm - Đêm huyền diệu (Magical Night) B4. Lệ Thu - Sao Biển (Etoile Des Neiges) (Starfish) C1. Minh Xuân & Phượng Hoàng - Mặt trời đen (Black Sun) C2. Thai Thanh - Bừng Sáng (Dawn) C3. Bang Chan - Những đóm mắt hoả châu (Fireballs) C4. Giao Linh - Chuyện Tình Sao Ly (A Love Story From Sau Ri) D1. Elvis Phương - Kho Tàng Của Chúng Ta (Our Treasures) D2. Thanh Lan - Hoài Thu (Autumn Memory) D3. Hùng Cường & Mai Lệ Huyền - Hờn Anh Giận Em (Jealousy) D4. Mai Lệ Huyền - Duyên phận con gái (A Girl's Destiny) D5. Phương Dung - Đố Ai (Riddles)

DUCKTAILS / DRACULA LEWIS - SPLIT (NO FUN PRODUCTIONS) LP £18*
Beautifully terrifying cavern drone sounds from Dracula Lewis and psychedelic spiralling melodies and electronic beats from Ducktails. Weird and out there, but it's on Carlos Giffoni's No Fun Productions, so what do you expect?

SAND - GOLEM (Rotorelief) LP £25
The is a reissue the legendary 1974 album, produced by Klaus Schulze, from the cosmic and psychedelic genius that is Sand. Julian Cope's album of the month back when it came out on CD, this is the vinyl version, and it is a beautiful thing. Rotorelief are releasing some beautiful things right now. Check out his review here: Archdrude's review - he says more about the album than I ever could.

CURRENT 93 - WHEN THE MAY RAIN COMES (Rotorelief) 12" £12
Also on Rotorelief comes this cover of the track by Sand, and it has two mixes split over the two sides. Another beautiful looking piece of art, the lead track first appeared on Current 93's influential album "Thunder Perfect Mind". Also appearing on this 12'' is an alternate version of the same track from a CD single which accompanied the first 1,000 copies of Tibet and Stapleton’s release of material by Sand, Ultrasonic Seraphim.

OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ - TELESTERION (RODRIGUEZ LOPEZ PRODUCTIONS) 4LP PLUS D/L / 2CD £60 / £20*
There aren't enough superlatives to describe what is contained here. This is the first compilation album by Omar as a solo artist. Both the CD and LP versions include a 20-page booklet with never-before-seen photos and liner notes by Omar's longtime friend and collaborator Sonny Kay. For anyone who is into music that challenges, excites, questions and confuses you, this album should cover all those bases. Without a doubt, one of the most amazing compilations to have ever come out, and that's not hyperbole, honest! For fans of At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta as well, obviously.

MOZZY GREEN - ROBOTS (360 Degree Music) £8*
The music of this trio (guitar/drums/cello/vocals) takes Tom Waits, Syd Barrett, Elliott Smith, Stravinsky and twisted folk, and adds a punk attitude. An interesting debut.

CARLTON MELTON - COUNTRY WAYS (MID TO LATE) COLOURED VINYL PICTURE DISC LP £20*
We beieve these are coloured vinyl picture discs, but because they're sealed we can't confirm that 100%, but that's how they were sold to us anyway! Colossal psychedelic riffs, psych drones, FX'd ambience, wah wah, trance-inducing rock. If you like Wooden Shjips, Moon Duo and the like then this is right up your noisy street.

V/A - LOCAL CUSTOMS: PRESSED AT BODDIE'S (THE NUMERO GROUP) 2LP / COLOURED MC £25 / £12*
The Numero Group does it again, unleashing an amazing batch of work for the first time ever, all packaged in a very limited Record Store Day set. The collection features material that was pressed up at the tiny Boddie pressing plant in Cleveland, a wonderful range of local artists from the late 60s through the mid 80s. The set is slanted heavily towards rare funk and soul, there's also some compelling rock sides too, especially some homegrown, dark-toned sounds from the 80s, clearly influenced by the styles in the UK underground. The set features 17 tracks in all – including "Don't Stop Smiling" by Jus Us, "Just A Dream" by Imperial Wonders, "Love Is On The Way" by Bill Spoon, "Let Me Go" by The Harmonics, "I'm Gonna Treat You Good" by The Donations, "Good For The Gander" by Hot Chocolate, "Woman You're Gonna Pay For This" by Wicked Lester (featuring future members of KISS), "The Voyage Of The Nautilus" by Russell Potter, and "Snakepit" by Berlin West. The LP includes an 18x24 fold out poster and the cassette is green!

PURLING HISS / PUFFY AREOLAS - SPLIT (PERMANENT RECORDS) LP £18*
Two US underground collectives cranking out some of the finest and fiercest shredding noise your mind will melt to. A heavy metallic wall of noise, in a good way, of course.

V/A - 4-WAY SPLIT (TROUBLE IN MIND) 7" PLUS D/L £6*
This record contains exclusive cover songs from all four artists. San Francisco savant Ty Segall tackles the Bob Seger System's fiery political number "2+2=?", Chicago's CoCoComa rips through The Wipers' "Messenger", Ottawa's finest, The White Wires cover "That's The Way A Woman Is" (popularised by the Ohio Express), and Orange County surf-punks Charlie & The Moonhearts close it out with a banging version of Love's classic "Seven & Seven Is".

NOMEANSNO - OLD (WRONG RECORDS) 12" £9
Canada's favourite power trio releases the first in a series of tour EPs which are now being repressed on 180g vinyl, and comprising four brand new tracks, these are the first songs to emerge since the release of All Roads Lead To Ausfahrt in 2006. Arguably as influential to the hardcore and punk scenes of the 80s as Minor Threat and Black Flag, their ethics, networking and quality of output encapsulates those early DIY ethics. For Fans of: Minutemen, Dead Kennedys, DOA, The Ex.

UV RACE - HOMO (IN THE RED) LP £17
This Melbourne band has been around a little while now, and this, the band's second album, has a nod to The Ramones and The Stooges, while exploring influences ranging from their Australian proto-punk and garage fascinations to American country, Krautrock and UK post-punk, citing the Velvet Underground and The Saints as influences. The album was recorded by fellow Australian Mikey Young, who is Eddy Current Suppression Ring's guitarist.

Other stuff there's no time to blog properly as yet, but will do in time:

CYMBALS - UNLEARN (Tough Love) LP £16*

V/A - HANGOVER LOUNGE VOLUME 2 (HANGOVER LOUNGE) 10"*

WOODEN WAND - CIRCLE (CRITICAL HEIGHTS) 7" PLUS D/L £5*

New stock update - Hype Williams, Earache, Zola Jesus, Umberto, Ducktails and more

New into the shop recently:

HYPE WILLIAMS - FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE STOP BEING POLITE AND START GETTING REEL (De Stijl) LP £18

Not the director, but a band from London and Berlin who make weird psychedelic dirty lo-fi spooky scary strange electronica. Catch them at The Black Box in Belfast on Saturday 26 March. For fans of CABARET VOLTAIRE / THROBBING GRISTLE / CARIBOU / ARIEL PINK / APHEX TWIN

UMBERTO - FROM THE GRAVE (Permanent Records) LP £19

The best soundtrack that GOBLIN didn't do to a film that ARGENTO didn't make. "A dark analog horror soundtrack dance party...a true homage to 70s cult Italian Giallo films" says the sticker on the record sleeve, and that sums it up perfectly. This is pretty much essential, you'll be digging out all your 70s horror soundtracks after listening to this. For fans of ENNIO MORRICONE / GOBLIN / ZOMBI / JOHN CARPENTER / DARIO ARGENTO

PSYCLONES - DIFFERENT THINKING PEOPLE (Permanent Records) LP £18

Post punk experiments in industrial music - heavy and harsh noise that you can dance to, if you so wish. All the material on the album is previously unreleased. This is unorthodox electronica for the open minded souls out there. "Obscure early 80s art punk...full colour printed inner sleeve featuring vintage show flyers, lyrics and discography album art - limited one time pressing of 500" says the label. For fans of CABARET VOLTAIRE / WHITEHOUSE / ULTRAVIOLENCE / DEVO / WIRE / THROBBING GRISTLE / CHROME

DUCKTAILS - III: ARCADE DYNAMICS (Woodsist) LP plus download £18

Experimental fuzziness from MATT MONDAINE of REAL ESTATE and PREDATOR VISION. Echo, reverb and washes of keyboard, with a little more structure than his previous releases, but it still has that weird bedroom lo-fi pop edge. For fans of ARIEL PINK / REAL ESTATE / THE SEA AND CAKE / PANDA BEAR / POCAHAUNTED / TORO Y MOI

ZOLA JESUS - TSAR BOMBA (Troubleman Unlimited) LP £18

The second (third?!) coming of Goth! Love and loss is something we all know about, and here it is sung about, backed by dark gloomy pop. The track "Sea Talk" is probably destined to become a future classic/ For fans of SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES / THE MISSION / DEAD CAN DANCE / COCTEAU TWINS / BAUHAUS / THE CURE

TAMARYN - LED ASTRAY AND WASHED ASHORE (Troubleman Unlimited) LP £18

A duo from San Francisco doing some lovely shimmery shoegazing, This is quite a cold album, with icy vocals, reverbed guitars, a dose of FX pedals, you know the sort of thing. This is a great example of one of the current crop of bands reinventing shoegazing! For fans of THE HORRORS / COCTEAU TWINS / 4AD / MAZZY STAR / MY BLOODY VALENTINE / SLOWDIVE

WOVEN BONES - IN AND OUT AND BACK AGAIN (HoZac) LP £16

Noisy, blissed out pop and rock 'n' roll from this trio who are influenced by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, THE STOOGES, SPACEMEN3 and the like. This is a great debut. For fans of THE FRESH & ONLYS / THEE OH SEES / THE BITTERS / BEACH FOSSILS / TY SEGALL / JACUZZI BOYS

We've also had a restock of the HOWLIN RAIN - THE GOOD LIFE EP on Birdman Records. Check earlier blogs for a description - wonderful stuff from ETHAN MILLER (COMETS ON FIRE) and his cohorts. The lead track is a psych rock cover of HENDRIX's "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp". Pretty much essential.

EARACHE - entire catalogue

We recently took delivery of the entire EARACHE catalogue, or at least everything the label had in stock. EARACHE is still one of the best underground labels around, and has been since the 80s. We've got CDs, LPs, a tape and some DVDs. It is certainly worth a look, come in and pick up some NAPALM DEATH, CATHEDRAL, SCORN, CAULDRON, MORBID ANGEL, ANNIHILATOR, OCEANO, TERRORIZOR, MORTIIS, WHITE WIZZARD and loads more.

Other bits and pieces we have in are by THE SMITHS, THEM CROOKED VULTURES, CAN, VARUKERS and loads more.

Hopefully we'll see you in the shop soon! Thanks for reading.

NEW ARRIVALS AND RESTOCKS

Hello again. Here's another bunch of stuff we've had delivered - some poppy punk, some psychedelic drones, some industrial noise, some indie pop, some synth pop and some funk. It'll all be in the shop from Wednesday 16 February, so here goes:

WOODEN SHJIPS - WOODEN SHJIPS / DOS / VOL. 1 / VOL. 2 (Holy Mountain / Sick Thirst)

Restocks of all their albums. You should probably already know WOODEN SHJIPS by now, but if you don't, this San Franciscan quartet plays minimal droning psychedelic garage rock, with more than a bit of a debt to Krautrock. Very fuzzy, lots of echo, hypnotic and primitive rhythms and delayed vocals. Really excellent stuff, you pretty much need it all. For fans of SUICIDE - SPACEMEN 3 - SPIRITUALIZED - THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - 13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS - CAN - LOOP. WOODEN SHJIPS (first album) CD £13. DOS (second album) LP PLUS DOWNLOAD/CD £18/£13. VOL.1 (compilation of their first three singles) LP PLUS DOWNLOAD/CD £18/£13. VOL. 2 (other non-album stuff they've released up to 2009) LP/CD £18/£13.

MOON DUO - ESCAPE (Woodsist)

Restock of their album. A WOODEN SHJIPS offshoot, trancey and hypnotic. Not too far away from WOODEN SHJIPS' output, but this time down to a duo. For fans of SPACEMEN 3 - WOODEN SHJIPS - SUICIDE - SILVER APPLES - KRAUTROCK - NEU!. LP £18.

THERAPY - BABYTEETH / PLEASURE DEATH (Southern Records)

Released in 1991 and 1992 repectively, these two mini-albums show THERAPY?'s most raw and industrial side. An interesting listen, offering glimpses into why A&M signed them after PLEASURE DEATH. For fans of BIG BLACK - HELMET - THE JESUS LIZARD - MINISTRY - FUTURE OF THE LEFT - REVOLTING COCKS. LPs £11 each.

BLACK TAMBOURINE - BLACK TAMBOURINE (Slumberland Records)

One of the seminal American indie pop bands of the 80s, but very short-lived - they only played live four times but their legacy is strong. There are four 'new' songs on here, which are songs they played live back in the day but never recorded, so the band got back together to record them for this compilation, and there are also two songs from the band's original demos. For fans of INDIE POP - FEEDBACK - BEAT HAPPENING - THE PASTELS - THE PRIMITIVES - VELOCITY GIRL - THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - THE WEDDING PRESENT - TALULAH GOSH - SARAH RECORDS - THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART. LP PLUS DOWNLOAD £18.

THE FRESH & ONLYS - PLAY IT STRANGE (In The Red)

More San Franciscans, giving us their second album. Less noisy than their debut, this one twangs and jangles like the best 80s alternative/indie pop/rock. For fans of REM - SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME - BUZZCOCKS. LP PLUS DOWNLOAD £18.

THE MONOCHROME SET - WHITE NOISE: EARLY RECORDINGS 1975-1977 (Captured Tracks)

This album covers the period before THE MONOCHROME SET's first single or album and these tracks have never been available on vinyl before. Excellent indie rock, heavily indebted to THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, it's a fascinating listen. For fans of THE MODERN LOVERS - THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - THE WEDDING PRESENT - PAVEMENT - XTC - WIRE - PULP - SWELL MAPS. LP £15.

WEEKEND - SPORTS (Slumberland Records)

Yet another band from San Francisco, this double LP marks the band's debut. Shoegazey, new wave pop noise, drenched in reverb. SLUMBERLAND is putting out a lot of good records at the minute, and this album by WEEKEND is one of them. For fans of MY BLOODY VALENTINE - ABE VIGODA - NO AGE - SONIC YOUTH - JOY DIVISION - SERENA-MANEESH. DOUBLE LP PLUS DOWNLOAD £20.

THE SOFT MOON - THE SOFT MOON (Captured Tracks)

CAPTURED TRACKS is releasing an awful lot of good stuff right now, including local favourites GIRLS NAMES. This is surely going to be a contender for album of the year, at least in my book. The project of just one man, LUIS VASQUEZ, it's 'coldwave/darkwave pop', whatever that is. But it doesn't matter what it gets pigeonholed as, it's just a great album. A bit Goth-y, a bit Kraurock-y, and just brilliant. He's from San Francisco by the way. Shocker. For fans of JOY DIVISION - BAUHAUS - KRAUTROCK - SUICIDE - SONIC YOUTH - SILK FLOWERS - BLANK DOGS. LP £19.

BLANK DOGS - LAND AND FIXED (Captured Tracks)

Another one-man project, this time from MIKE SNIPER, the founder and operator of CAPTURED TRACKS. This is new wave synth pop of the highest order. Nice moody electronica for fans of BRIAN ENO - SUICIDE - WAVVES - THE MOUNTAIN GOATS - THE SOFT MOON - CRYSTAL STILTS - FACTORY RECORDS. LP £19.

HOWLIN RAIN - THE GOOD LIFE (Birdman Records)

Led by COMETS ON FIRE mainman ETHAN MILLER, the band certainly has a nod towards 70s classic rock, quite far removed from the noise rock of COMETS ON FIRE. Excellently psychedelic artwork, as well as a cover of the JIMI HENDRIX track "BURNING OF THE MIDNIGHT LAMP" make for a fine EP. If you've heard the band's two previous albums (HOWLIN RAIN and MAGNIFICENT FIEND) you'll know that the band has elements of classic rock, country and gospel in its mix, and this EP has touches of all of those. Highly recommended. For fans of COMETS ON FIRE - BLUE CHEER - NEIL YOUNG - THE BLACK KEYS - DUNGEN - WOODEN SHJIPS - THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. LP £16.

SUPER WILD HORSES - FIFTEEN (Hozac)

This female Australian duo gives us their superb debut, full of energetic punk pop using just guitars, drums and keyboards. Very garage-based, lots of great guitar hooks, loads of attitude, and full of great music. One of last year's finest albums. For fans of BIKINI KILL - THE RAMONES - THE VELVET UNDERGROUND - THE BREEDERS. LP £17.

DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN - GHOST WITH CHAINS (Not Not Fun)

Psychedlic mantras, ritualistic drums, ghostly vocals - what some could call 'typical' NOT NOT FUN (if there is such a thing). This is the band's third official album, limited to 490 copies worldwide. For fans of POCAHAUNTED - SUN ARAW - ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - NOT NOT FUN - LA VAMPIRES. LP £19.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - GOOD GOD! A GOSPEL FUNK HYMNAL / GOOD GOD! BORN AGAIN FUNK (The Numero Group)

Two double albums here from THE NUMERO GROUP's "GOOD GOD!" series of rare funk, soul and gospel. The label digs deep to find stuff you've probably never heard before, but once you've heard it, you're glad you did. A GOSPEL FUNK HYMNAL is, according to the label, "...a mix of primitive choirs, spacious breaks, congas, elderly rappers impersonating the devil, cast recordings, thumping bass, and JAMES BROWN impressionists, all with a heavy slathering of gospel gravy." On BORN AGAIN FUNK "the performers, as we’ve come to know them over the years, are boldly assured. So is their music." For fans of GOSPEL - SOUL - FUNK - BLUES - JAMES BROWN - MA RAINEY - TAMPA RED. DOUBLE LPs £23 each.

CARLTON MELTON - HANDLING SNAKES (Valley King Records)

This 7" comes with two stickers, wonderful artwork, silkscreened packaging, and each copy is signed and numbered by the artist, ALAN FORBES. The insert is silkscreened as well. All this makes for an expensive record though, but if you are into psychedelic trips, spaced out rock, hypnotic trance, then this will be for you. For fans of WOODEN SHJIPS - THE HEADS - SPACEMEN 3 - GNOD - WHITE HILLS - MOON DUO. 7" £7.

That's all for now. Expect another blog towards the end of the month/beginning of March. Thanks for reading!
